Make your words and actions reflect the Christmas spirit
As a Christian, I tend to say “Merry Christmas” to everyone as the birth of Jesus is central to my faith. However, my daughter mentioned that she usually says “Happy Holidays” to acknowledge the season without attaching it to a religious belief.
I agree that saying “Season’s Greetings” or “Happy Holidays” is more inclusive of all people. But Christmas is a specific celebration and I want to respect my own values. I feel I have the right to express myself according to my beliefs. I understand some workplaces frown at saying, “Merry Christmas” but I think if it reflects their faith and is said in a spirit of goodwill it should be fine.
That said, if someone says to me “Happy Holidays”, “Happy Hanukkah” or “Blessed Kwanzaa”, I will respect their choice of greeting. I understand that people might choose different greetings, and working in a multicultural environment I want to be friendly, even though I don’t celebrate their holiday. I’ve learned that a simple response like, “Thank you. Wishing you peace and blessings during this season” is a neutral but warm reply that aligns with my Christian values.
However, years ago I expected others to conform to my Christian practices and would respond with an abrupt “Merry Christmas” when someone greeted me differently. But I recognized that’s not a very Christian response and now try to respond to others with kindness and respect. I still want to stay true to my faith so a simple, “Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays” with a friendly tone usually brightens their day regardless of their beliefs.
In our society, there are many differing and opposing views. The Christmas season is a great time for Christians to show respect and kindness to all people. Ideally, any greeting should reflect the love and compassion central to Christianity while avoiding confrontation. I know that sometimes the best way to share my faith is not through words but through how I treat others.
Jesus teaches us to love and respect others. And of course, as a Christian, praying for our neighbors and praying for our enemies is central to our faith. Let’s make our words and actions a reflection of the Christmas spirit.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
