God’s character traits in the Old and New Testaments
The other day, I overheard a conversation where someone was trying to convince their friend that the God of the New Testament was a different God from the Old Testament.
They explained that Jesus was a “nice” God compared with the God filled with wrath found in the pages of Hebrew scripture.
I wanted to lean in and interrupt their conversation and explain that this was not true. But, alas, they had walked on. In my mind, I shouted to them, The God of the Old Testament is the same God of the New Testament! He’s the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
I decided to open my Bible and prove this truth.
God is Loving
Old Testament
His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1, NIV)New Testament
God is love. (1 John 4:8, NIV)
God’s love is everlasting and central to who He is. Both Testaments show that God deeply loves His people.
God is Holy
Old Testament
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty. (Isaiah 6:3, NIV)New Testament
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord… (Revelation 4:8, NIV)
God’s holiness is emphasized in both Testaments. His holiness means He is pure and set apart from sin.
God is Merciful
Old Testament
The Lord, a God merciful and gracious. (Exodus 34:6, ESV)New Testament
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Luke 6:36, NIV)
God is always merciful, offering forgiveness and compassion, both in the Old and New Testament.
God is Just
Old Testament
All His ways are just. (Deuteronomy 32:4, NIV)New Testament
So as to be just and the one who justifies… (Romans 3:26, NIV)
God is fair and just. He punishes sin but also provides a way for forgiveness, showing His justice in both Testaments.
God is Faithful
Old Testament
Great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:23, NIV)New Testament
God is faithful. (1 Corinthians 1:9, NIV)
God is always trustworthy and keeps His promises. His faithfulness is consistent across both Testaments.
God is Slow to Anger
Old Testament
The Lord is compassionate, slow to anger. (Psalm 103:8, NIV)New Testament
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise… not wanting anyone to perish. (2 Peter 3:9, NIV)
God is patient, giving people time to repent and turn back to Him.
God is Forgiving
Old Testament
But you are a forgiving God… (Nehemiah 9:17, NIV)New Testament
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. (Ephesians 1:7, NIV)
God offers forgiveness both in the Old Testament (through repentance and sacrifices) and in the New Testament (through Jesus).
God is Good
Old Testament
Taste and see that the Lord is good. (Psalm 34:8, NIV)New Testament
Every good and perfect gift is from above. (James 1:17, NIV)
God’s goodness is seen in all He does, whether in creation, provision, or salvation.
God is Gracious
Old Testament
Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious… (Joel 2:13, NIV)New Testament
For it is by grace you have been saved… (Ephesians 2:8, NIV)
God’s grace, or undeserved favor, is shown in both Testaments, offering people salvation and blessings.
God is Righteous
Old Testament
The Lord is righteous in all His ways. (Psalm 145:17, NIV)New Testament
The Lord, the righteous Judge… (2 Timothy 4:8, NIV)
God is always right and just. His righteousness is revealed in His actions and judgments in both Testaments.
God is Unchanging
Old Testament
I the Lord do not change. (Malachi 3:6, NIV)New Testament
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8, NIV)
God’s character is constant and does not change, meaning He is dependable and trustworthy at all times.
My minister had preached on this stating that. “God is still slow to anger, abounding in love. He is not different. God’s love is not a condemning love it’s a perfecting love. He is merciful and compassionate. We are called to be holy because He is holy.”
God’s nature is continuous between the Old and New Testaments.
