Jesus isn’t the meek and mild man some people think He is
Years ago, I attended an Easter service at my brother’s church. They put on a play where my brother played the role of Jesus. Since that time, I find myself imagining Jesus to look similar to him.
Like my brother, Jesus has been described as patient (1 Timothy 1:16) and meek (Matthew 11:29). But meekness is sometimes thought of as shy, submissive, and spineless. Both my brother and Jesus are far from it!
Although Jesus was kind and gentle, He had great authority and could do amazing things no one else could. He had power.
Jesus had power over nature, disease, demons, sin, and death.
Jesus’ Power Over Nature
(Luke 5:1–11)
Peter had been fishing all night yet caught nothing. Then Jesus told him to let down his nets one last time and they filled to the breaking point.
Jesus showed His authority over creation. He caused the fish to come to the nets, something no human could do. This miracle showed His power over creation as nature obeyed Him.
Jesus’ Power Over Disease
(Matthew 9:18–26)
While on the way to heal a young girl, a woman touched Jesus’ robe and was healed instantly.
Jesus showed His power to heal and restore people. He healed the woman’s sickness with just a touch. His power over disease proves He was divine.
Jesus’ Power Over Demons
(Luke 8:26–39)
When Jesus met a man possessed by many demons, He commanded them to leave the man.
Jesus showed His power over the spiritual world. Demons are spiritual beings that no human can control, but He was more powerful than any evil force.
Jesus’ Power Over Sin
(Mark 2:3–12)
Before healing a paralyzed man, Jesus said, “Your sins are forgiven.”
Jesus showed His authority over forgiveness and spiritual healing. Only God could forgive sins. He was powerful over both physical and spiritual problems.
Jesus’ Power Over Death
(1 Corinthians 15:1–19)
Paul explained that Jesus’ resurrection proved He had power over death and everyone who believes in Him will also rise again one day.
Jesus showed His victory over death and eternal life. Rising from the dead is something only God can do. Jesus didn’t stay in the grave, demonstrating His power over death.
Although Jesus was gentle, patient, and meek, He was also powerful. Whether it was controlling nature, healing the sick, commanding demons, forgiving sins, or defeating death, Jesus showed His authority in every area of life. We can trust Him with everything because there’s nothing He can’t handle.
