Are God and Satan Equals?

From time to time, I catch myself thinking of good and evil as if they’re evenly matched , like  two opposing forces pushing against each other. It’s an easy picture to slip into, especially when life feels heavy or uncertain. But when I pause and look more closely at Scripture, I’m reminded that this isn’t how God presents it.

This has never been a battle between equals.

Satan is a created being. God is not. Satan operates within limits. God sets them.

Even the angels understand this distinction.

In Jude, there’s a brief but telling moment involving Michael the archangel and Satan. Michael says,

“The Lord rebuke you.” (Jude 1:9 NIV)

That response has always made me stop and think. Michael knows where authority truly rests, and he doesn’t step outside of it. He trusts God to handle what belongs to God.

If angels — powerful, spiritual beings — don’t act independently of God’s authority, then neither chaos nor evil is roaming freely. God is in control. He’s steady, present, and reigning.

“The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19 NIV)

All means all — even the things we don’t see or fully understand.

For me, this shifts the focus of my own faith. I’m not called to confront darkness on my own or to live on high alert, constantly bracing for spiritual battles. Instead, I’m invited to stay close to God, to listen, and to trust.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7 NIV)

Submission comes first. It reminds me that strength comes from from staying aligned with the One who leads.

Jesus already faced what needed to be faced. The victory’s secured.

“ You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4 NIV)

Remembering this allows me to loosen my grip, to stop carrying things I was never meant to manage. God is still on the throne. His authority has never been in question.

And that’s a good place to rest.
