What did he look like?
I often have nightmares where there is an evil presence in the upstairs rooms of a house. I don’t dare venture up there because of my terror. Although I never see anything (or anyone), I know it is evil. I imagine it’s Satan himself.
Although I don’t know what Satan looks like I do know a few things about him.
I know Satan is a fallen angel (Isaiah 14:12–17, NIV) who has also been described as a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8, NIV), a great dragon (Revelation 12:9, NIV), an ancient serpent (Revelation 20:2, NIV), and one who masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14, NIV).
But I’ve often wondered what kind of angel he was.
I’ve learned that there are different types of angels. The most well-known are Michael and Gabriel — known as Archangels (Jude 1:9, 1 Thessalonians 4:16, Daniel 10:13, Revelation 12:7–9).
Gabriel likely appeared in human form to deliver messages but he must’ve been quite the sight as those he appeared to were stricken with fear. They had to be told, “Do not be afraid.”
Other angels are the Seraphim (Isaiah 6:2–7), described as having faces, feet, and hands so they may look similar to humans.
The third are the Cherubim (Genesis 3:24, Ezekiel 10:20–22, Psalm 18:10, Exodus 25:22). But unlike the cute cartoon Valentine cherubs, these angels were shown to have four faces and four wings and what looked like human hands under their wings.
During my Bible study, I learned that Lucifer was a perfectly beautiful Cherub before he rebelled and was thrown out of heaven (Ezekiel 28:14, NIV) and his name changed to Satan.
Although the Bible doesn’t tell us exactly what Satan looks like I’m not eager to meet him as a lion, dragon, serpent, or even an angel of light.
But, like in my dreams where he is defeated by my calling out the name of Jesus, his fate is sealed and he will be banished forever.
